Driving in major cities in France is difficult like in any city. Very confusing and lots of traffic. Countryside travel is terrific. Roads are very well marked and well maintained. Road signs/legends are typical as in most of Europe. The main autoroutes, typically toll roads are designated "A" roads. If you want to go fast between major cities, this is the way to go. Be aware that these major autoroutes may have multiple designations that include both "E" and "N" numbers. (ie A6/E15). We suggest the more scenic routes
